Many marketers have always wondered how to build a customer base. To build a customer base is actually trying to build the foundation of your online business. A customer base will be the ones giving you repeated business and repeated sales.
Imagine if you were the customer, would you rather buy from a total stranger or from someone whom you have already interacted with such as from forum discussions, email conversations or even someone your friend introduced you too. Most likely you will avoid the total stranger for fear of being cheated and mislead.
This happens to be one of the main reasons why we need to build a customer base. It provides us with a group that trusts us and with whatever we recommend; they will be the ones that will most likely buy from us. This also provides us with repeated sales to the same customer base with less sales effort.
There are several ways to build a customer base. Listed here are the three methods that anyone can implement to build a relationship with their customers.
- Forum participation, online discussions and blog commenting.
- Maintain a mailing list.
- Maintain your existing customers.
In the first method, be friendly and give free, useful and relevant advice to other forum members. For blog commenting, be courteous and give constructive comments. If you can maintain this routine then you will be noticed in a matter of time. They will look at you as if you are an expert in your niche and will look forward to your advice. They will also begin to trust you and may become your customers in the future. From there you can build a customer base.
In the second method, you will need a mailing list with double opt-in confirmed subscribers. Not just a list of subscribers that you bought from somewhere. Learn list building techniques and build yourself a massive list of subscribers. Try maintaining a content packed site for your visitors and throw in a freebie such as an e-book to entice your visitors to subscribe to your mailing list. With a mailing list build confidence with your subscribers and let them get to know and trust you.
In the third method, you need to maintain your existing customers. Provide good support for the product or service that you have sold. Reply promptly any questions that are asked by your customers. By doing this you are giving your customers value for money and if he is impressed, future purchases from this customer will be likely.
To build a customer base is very important because it can spread virally. Imagine if your current customer base would introduce new customers and with this your business would grow even much faster than you would have anticipated. A viral business equals less work in promoting.
